The canal was officially opened by Her Royal Highness by cutting a ribbon and then boarding the aptly named Perseverance which sailed under the Stroud Brewery Bridge once the lock had been lowered and the gates opened.

The canal project which is being paid for by the Heritage Lottery Fund with Stroud District Council as lead partner has bought in £30 million pounds to the District, two local companies Dr M Foundry and Trutum worked on the locks bringing in £100,000 to the local community.

Neil Carmichael said: "I am very pleased that Her Royal Highness was able to attend this exciting and significant event for Stroud. I very much enjoyed meeting with the volunteers whose tireless work on the Wallbridge Upper Lock and Stroud Brewery Bridge enabled this event to take place. The opening of the canals will strengthen our community, our economy and help put Stroud firmly back on the map."
