Neil Carmichael condemns national violence
I returned to the House of Commons on Thursday to hear the statement given by the Prime Minister on the reaction of the Government to the crisis. The debates following the statements by the Prime Minister and Home Secretary were uplifting in the way that everyone came together to condemn the wanton destruction of homes, businesses and lives.
Praise for the police's and the other emergency services action in dealing with the looters and rioters was unanimous. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of the continual improvement within that service and that it would be reformed to ensure that it remained responsive to the needs of the communities that it serves.
Many of my colleagues made important points about the Government being responsive to the difficulties faced by, individuals, communities and businesses following the riots. We have therefore developed an Action Plan to ensure reforms are made and that policy areas are reviewed to ensure that this behaviour does not happen again.
I echoed the sentiments of my colleagues from those constituencies that were worst affected and felt that it was important they got the opportunity to represent those directly hit by the appalling behaviour that we have recently witnessed
