Creativity, Sport and Healthy Living
14 May 2012 at 09:32
This week I spent several hours in Stroud and the Valleys enjoying the excellent, imaginative and inspiring art and crafts on display as part of the Site Festival 2012. We are very fortunate to have such a wide range of local artists and deserve the growing reputation for creativity garnered through the Festival.
During my school years I was a keen artist, winning a few prizes and 'merits' so, one day, I might reactivate my interest in painting and, more generally, 'making things'. In the meantime, I continue to support this valuable sector in our communities across the Valleys. Part of a fulfilled life is to be close to art, music and the environment.
Continuing an art theme, I presented a prize for the best picture of a Magistrates Court in action. The winning pupil was from Whitminster School. The competition is all about promoting an understanding of the court system and, to this end, it is very effective.
Coming up soon is the arrival to Stroud of the Olympic Torch. As it goes though the town on Wednesday 23 May, it will be passing my office on London Road. This memorable symbol demonstrates the inclusiveness of the games and underpins the value of sport for people of all ages. I hope that the games encourage more participation in all sports.
Last week, the Environmental Audit Committee on which I sit published a report on food, stressing the need for sensible eating and healthy lifestyles. This is in line with a theme I have been developing in the House of Commons through my chairmanship of the Vascular Disease All Parliamentary Group because frequent causes of vascular problems are obesity and diabetes.
Now that spring is here, I am often busy in the garden, planting and sowing as appropriate. Thinking about the food we eat, where it came from and how it should be prepared is another aspect of healthy living. Spring in the Valleys and Vale is laden with useful messages.
