In the Consituency
02 April 2012 at 09:37
With Easter just ahead, there is a good opportunity to spend some quality time in the constituency during the Recess. After highlighting issues around planning policy, vision screening and the importance of mathematics in the House of Commons, I returned to Stroud in order to attend the twentieth celebration of the Stroud-Ancenis school exchange, involving Marling and Stroud High School.
It is impressive that three bus loads of French pupils came to Stroud for ten days - two stayed in our house - and felt so much at home in our community. Strong relationships have been forged between the three schools and I was pleased to play my part in showing French sixth formers around the House of Commons.
Next, I went to the Children's Centre at Gloucester Royal Hospital. It is purpose built through the Private Finance Initiative and situated adjacent to the Orchard Car Park. Without doubt, it manages to be welcoming, friendly, efficient and highly professional all at once. For seriously ill or injured children, this is a good place to be, and is obviously appreciate by parents and the wider community.
Planning and housing was also on my agenda. Following the publicity over the proposals to build houses in between Eastington and Stonehouse, I offered similar support to campaigners in Cam, also concerned about the implication for their rural outlook. I underlined the value of neighbourhood planning, recently introduced through the Localism Act 2011, and the need to base planning decisions on robust economic and social analysis.
Another interesting visit was to the Bristol and Gloucestershire Gliding Club, one of two gliding clubs in the locality, the other being the Cotswold Gliding Club on Aston Down. I had not realised just how complex but enjoyable, even thrilling, gliding is. The panoramic views of the beautiful countryside from above in a glider must be wonderful. I met glider enthusiasts in the House of Commons while meeting a Marling student as part of the Boeing sponsored 'Build a Plane' project.
