'Cream' of the Festival

'Cream' of the Festival

25 April 2012 at 16:36

Nampak and Dairy Crest sponsored a Reducing the Carbon Footprint and Recycling lunch held at Dairy Crest at their Severnside site. Representatives from Dairy Crest and Nampak both led very interesting talks concerning reducing the carbon footprint by lightening plastic containers and the introduction of up to 50% recycled product in the manufacturing process. They talked of the aims of the future and the challenges to achieving major reductions in their carbon footprint. After the talks there was an exciting discussion on how the government can help support the challenges that businesses are facing when dealing with sustainability and corporate responsibility issues with lots of interesting suggestions.

After a break for lunch attendees were given the chance to tour the Dairy Crest factory...not before donning hair nets, protective coats and factory issued footwear though.  The tour was a fascinating insight into the workings of a dairy factory where we saw everything from bottling to batching to the final journey of the milk.

Incredibly there are 764 different versions of the 'white stuff' produced by Dairy Crest which is stored in what seems to be the largest fridge in the world, additionally to this there are also many flavours of the milkshake 'Frijj', and different creams produced. The operation behind producing the milk is extremely intricate and it takes 670 members of staff to help produce 500 million litres of milk a year.
